Doom!

What an utter failure last night's efforts turned out to be.  I got through about 45 minutes of a 2 hour class before deciding to go home.  I'd been feeling nauseous almost from the start of class, and by the time 45 minutes had rolled  around, I felt positively vomitous.

How did this happen?  Well, being hideously unfit would obviously be a contributing factor, as would the fact that I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to extended physical exertion.  At the end of it though, I was simply sleep-deprived and dehydrated.  I'd had about 4 hours of sleep the night before, and hadn't drunk anywhere near enough water during the day.

I guess this all goes to show that doing something like this is a bigger commitment than just turning up to class and giving your best for those 2 hours.  You've really got to look after yourself right around the clock, from getting enough sleep to staying hydrated and eating the proper foods.  It's difficult to do for a lot of people, and definitely for me, but it has to be done if not only because you want to improve your physical look, but simply from a health perspective.

Summer's around the corner here in Australia, and I'm starting to be revisited by memories of how much I hate not being able to cover up my weight with a good thick hoody like I can in the winter.  Aside from all the obvious and straightforward health reasons, I need to drop some weight so I can actually be comfortable walking around in a shirt.  Come on!

My Return!

So, I finally returned to Krav Maga training tonight.

Oh, I didn't mention in my first post; I started Krav Maga about 2 years ago, but a little more than a month into my training, I came off my motorbike and spent just over a year dealing with pain and then niggly smaller pains that made it difficult to work out properly. Then so much time had passed that it was easy to talk myself out of returning (plus my move out to the suburbs). But after a lot of psyching myself up, I've returned!

There was pretty much nobody there tonight that I remember from 2 years ago, haha. Drew, one of the instructors, tells me that's fairly normal; that student turnover tends to churn every year or so. That's a shame, to think there aren't many longterm students visiting the same... dojo? Not sure of the best name for it.

Anyway. What an exhaustive workout! It goes from 7:15pm to 9pm, and there's very little rest time in that period. Don't be put off by that though; you actually get quite a bit of rest without realising it, as watching the instructor walk us all through a new technique can give you 5 or so minutes.

Because there's only two sessions a week at my dojo (as far as I know, anyway), the beginners are mixed in with the advanced students. That's not as scary as it sounds though, as the advanced students go pretty easy on us newbies when they're paired up with us. I spent most of the night partnered with a fellow who'd been going for 5 months, and while he knew most of what we were doing, he was very patient with me. So that was great.

Right, I have a shocking headache. Off to bed!

Hola!

Hey folks,

I thought I'd start myself a blog to, hopefully, chronicle my journey from absolute newbie to utter champion (alright, maybe that's going a bit too far haha) in the world of Krav Maga.

A little about myself, I guess. I'm a 28yr old graphic artist living in Melbourne, Australia. I'm into reading—mostly sci-fi, I admit—as well as drawing, music (very eclectic tastes; electronica, indie rock, folk rock, R&B, classic rock, etc.), cars of all sort (yep, even Hyundais), and trying to get fit! I'm carrying more than a few extra kilos, so Krav Maga is one thing I hope will help turn my fitness around.

For those who don't know what Krav Maga is, here's a few links to get your head around it.

My ultimate goal for this blog is to make regular folks like you and me a little more aware of the virtues of Krav Maga - and a lot of it will be finding out for myself exactly what the pros and cons of KM are. I hope it's helpful for you!
